Residents and business operators in the fast-developing rural community of Spaldings in Clarendon are expressing concern that there is no working fire hydrant in that town.
They have complained that for a town which has seen a significant increase in population and business establishments over recent years, all hydrants in the area should have been in good working order.
Resident and retired firefighter, Phillip Morris, is shocked there is no working hydrant in the busy town. Morris shared that he has knowledge of where hydrants should have been installed in the town.
"There should have been at least one working fire hydrant near to especially the three gas stations in this town, as well as the hospital," said Morris.
He said as far as he is aware, there is none working close to any of these facilities and he, like other residents, is scared that should there be a major fire, life and property would be seriously affected.
He is calling on the councillor for the area, Trevor Gordon, to take the necessary steps in collaboration with the Clarendon Fire Department in addressing the situation, as far too many lives are at risk.
Fire fear
One business operator who opted for anonymity, in supporting Morris, said he is fearful for his and other businesses in Spaldings should there be a major fire. He expressed insecurity for his establishment and called for swift actions to be taken.
Councillor Gordon said he was aware there were at least three fire hydrants in the area.
"The one next to the Shell gas station was repaired, but the other two, one next to the library and the one at Zinc Shop just out of the town. I am not sure if they are working," he said.
Gordon said efforts are being made to identify all non-functioning fire hydrants in the parish, have them repaired, and put back into service.
