A family of four, including two 12-year-old boys, a minor, and her mother, are now homeless after fire gutted their three-bedroom house shortly after 1:30 p.m. yesterday at Folly in Port Antonio, Portland.
The origin of the fire is not yet determined, however, Donique Crooks, 23, is still fighting to come to grips with her loss, as nothing was salvaged during the raging inferno.
"I have lost everything," she said. "It is a three-bedroom board house, which was also occupied by my seven-year-old daughter and my twin brothers. My brothers are in Kingston attending a funeral and my daughter is still with a family member. No one was home during the blaze, and the children lost textbooks, some of which were rented, uniforms, shoes, and school bags. Everything went up in flames, and at this time I'm unsure as to my next move."
Mayor of Port Antonio, Benny White, has committed to assist the children with uniforms and school shoes.
A refrigerator, a four-burner gas stove, three double beds, a DVD player, a television set, a component set, electric iron, fan, dresser, and other furniture went up in flames. Firefighters, who arrived on the scene in a timely manner, were only able to carry out cooling- down operation. Loss is estimated at approximately $3 million and the house was not insured.
