$180,000 THROWN IN GARBAGE - Owner chases truck for its return

André Williams, STAR Writer

The owner of a bar in rural St Andrew was left to sweat for a few hours recently after an employee accidentally threw close to $200,000 in the trash recently. Fortunately for her, the money was later recovered after a lengthy search of a garbage truck, which had residents of a nearby housing scheme looking on and wondering how could someone make such a mistake.

Information reaching THE STAR is that close to the busy Easter weekend, the proprietor of a bar and her bartender had a brief scare after they realised that cash totalling $180,000 had been thrown out from its usual place of safe keeping - a garbage bin located inside the bar.

huge sales

Our news team understands that it is customary for the operators of the bar to store huge sales in a bag and then place in the garbage bin.

However, on the day in question, the bag containing the funds was unsuspectingly thrown out into the main garbage pile, which was then removed by collectors attached to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

THE STAR gathered that this development sent the owner of the cash in search of the missing funds.

Our news team learnt that the garbage truck was then spotted some four miles away from the bar, in a housing scheme as the men on the truck picked up more rubbish.

An onlooker who was present at the scene of the search told our news team what transpired.

He said, "a put mi a put out my garbage and hear the commotion. When mi look mi see the garbage man dem and some woman in a di trash a search through some bags of garbage. At first I never know what dem looking for cause everybody a wonder why dem a dig through the garbage so."

four men

Another resident said, "Mi know a something serious dem a look for, but mi never even know say a money. A when mi see like somebody say dem find it and lift up the bag mi realise, mi see like di garbage man dem get a thing to enuh."

Our news team was told by a source close to the owner of the cash that $2,000 each was handed in appreciation to the four men aboard the truck to their delight.

When our news team contacted the St Andrew North Police Division they provided confirmation.

"The police have knowledge of the incident. The bag containing money went missing for a relatively short while, but our understanding is that it was recovered from the garbage compartment of the truck by the rightful owner," said a senior policeman.
