As part of its ongoing drive to reduce the illegal use of electricity, the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) will be regularising electricity use by some consumers in sections of Olympic Gardens, Seaward Drive, and surrounding areas, commencing on May 5.
The communities are 440 Drive, Drewsland Phase 3, Seaward Drive, Top Olympic Way, Sterling Avenue, Top Balcombe Drive, Penwood and surrounding areas.
In a release, the JPS stated that it has been working in those areas for over a year, ensuring that the appropriate infrastructure is in place and promoting awareness among residents about the electricity regularisation exercise, which will involve the implementation of the Residential Advanced Metering Infrastructure (RAMI) system.
The company, the release stated, is now appealing to residents who have had their premises certified by the government electrical inspectorate, to complete the legalisation process by signing contracts.
JPS has been grappling with the problem of illegal usage of electricity through methods including operations to remove 'throw-ups', meter inspection, account audits and the implementation of anti-theft networks in sections of the island.
