Crime prevention tips for females

The Police are advising members of the public, particularly women to be extra vigilant when operating in public. This advisory came against a sharp increase in robberies against females.

These incidents often occur at home, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and in shopping centres and plazas, a release from the communication arm of the police force stated.

According to the release below are some tips that are to be observed:

ROBBERY

1. When Shopping

Avoid walking with too many bags, as you may become a target.

Trust your instincts - if you sense trouble, try to get to a safe location.

Show confidence - walk at a steady pace, keep your head up and avoid carrying lots of packages- as this can make you look defenceless and divides your attention.

Don't look like an easy target - robbers want someone who will provide the least resistance. If you look like you know where you are going, walk with your head up and eyes alert, you will most likely be left alone.

Be observant. Do not walk and use gadgets.

Remain alert and observe people around you. Know who is walking behind and in front of you. Things to watch for include suspicious persons or vehicles, people who are wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather (ex. A long Trench coat in the middle of summer), and people just loitering around.
