"That guy needs to find new friends and find a less abusive woman, not because he is a man - he can be abused too, abuse in any case is wrong," a viewer commented.

Another added: "If it was vice-versa it would've been a huge controversy, domestic violence is never okay, it doesn't matter what gender is doing the violence. I hope he gets out of that abusive relationship."

"That man is a gentleman, if he did box her down it would be the other way around. She dissing him; calling him p. I respect you, Don, run away that big fat ting you have. She's not a real woman," another viewer stated.

e-Learning Jamaica Tablet distribution in high gear

Horace Fisher

Seventh graders, Britania (left) and Brianna Harris from Central High School in May Pen, Clarendon, show their new tablets following the handover of the educational tools to the institution on Monday.

Horace Fisher, Star Writer

The $1.4 billion Tablet in Schools Pilot Programme is well under way with some 8,900 students and 1,600 teachers already receiving the educational gadgets, according to e-Learning Jamaica Implementation Supervisor, Dorothy Thompson.

She also disclosed that since the distribution began at the Salt Savannah Primary School in Rocky Point, Clarendon, in early September, 19 of the 38 schools in the pilot programme have benefited. However, there are reported incidents of thefts.

"We are expected to distribute some 26,000 tablets to the 38 schools in the pilot programme by the end of November," Thompson disclosed at Monday's distribution at Central High in May Pen, Clarendon.

"Unfortunately, a number of the tablets have already been stolen and are being tracked by our security's team. However, the perpetrators have turned the systems off and we are unable to recover them at this time."

She argued that while the educational gadgets have already been distributed to schools in every parish except St Ann and St Mary, there are a number of uncollected systems for students and new teachers who entered the school system in September.

"There are a few students and some teachers who are yet to receive theirs. However, as soon as arrangements are made, they, too, will be presented," the implementation supervisor said.

Principal of Central High, Vinroy Harris, whose school is the 21st in the programme to receive the educational gadgets, was overjoyed. He declared that the teaching and learning experience at the school will be significantly enhanced.

According to Harris, the tablets have ushered in a new chapter of students' educational development, which will give instructors a strong leverage and will eventually be linked to the institution's Students Monitoring System.

"The tablets are a key resource in the educational development of our students, because it will eliminate a lot of the chalk and talk and provide for a more participatory learning experience here," Harris reasoned.

"Eventually, we will be able to link the systems tour Students Monitoring System to give teachers a greater latitude and insight into the students' activities at school and/or at home."

Cruise ship complex in Falmouth to get walk-through thermal sensor

A walk-through thermal-sensing unit is to be purchased for the Falmouth Cruise Ship Complex as part of the Government's Ebola Preparedness and Response Activities.

Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson received a cheque valued at J$7 million from Supreme Ventures Limited for the purchase of the unit, installation and training as well as the provision of 25 handheld thermal sensors and Ebola kits. The official handover took place at Jamaica House Monday.

Dr Ferguson said the Ministry of Health has been working with various partners and stakeholders to put mechanisms and systems in place towards an effective response to Ebola.

"A part of this preparation means putting systems in place at our points of entry to heighten our surveillance. This contribution from Supreme Ventures Ltd will go a far way in terms of the preparedness effort. With the current Ebola outbreak which has seen cases rising to more than 10,000 and close to 5,000 deaths, and with new cases showing up in the United States and Spain, Jamaica's response especially at the points of entry must be heightened," he stated.

Last week, Sagicor donated funds to purchase a walk-through thermal-sensing unit for the Sangster International Airport.

Dr Ferguson says he is pleased with the response from the private sector and other groups which have been assisting with the country's preparation for Ebola.

Two remanded in triple murder released

Two of the three men who were previously taken into custody in relation to last week's triple murder in the east Kingston community of Rockfort have been released.

They are Paul Waite, otherwise known as 'Pappy', and a man known only by his alias 'Jah Bouki'. The third man known only as 'Monkey Man remains in custody.

According to Deputy Superintendent Hornet Williams, who is attached to the East Kingston Police Division, the men were released because the police had nothing to hold them on.

"We are not getting anything substantial from the citizens, we do not have a choice, we have to release them. There is nothing we can do," Williams said.

Top police investigators had met yesterday to discuss the fate of the three men taken into custody and as a result of insufficient information to hold them, two were released.

It was reported that last Wednesday patrons were at a bar along St John's Road in the community after 7 p.m. when a group of gunmen pounced on them and opened fire indiscriminately.

Eight persons were shot in the attack, which left three dead.

WESTERN BUREAU: A British national who attempted to smuggle 27 packages of cocaine in his rectum pleaded guilty and was remanded in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Forty-three-year-old Kevin Peart, from Birmingham, England, was before the court on charges of possession of, dealing in and attempting to export half a pound of cocaine. He was remanded until November 3, when he will be brought back for sentencing.

The court was told that on October 17, approximately 3:10 p.m., Peart was preparing to board a flight to Birmingham at the Sangster International Airport, when an officer on duty noticed that he was behaving suspiciously.

Peart was taken to an interview room, where he admitted to pushing 27 packages of cocaine into his anus. He was taken to another room where he subsequently passed out the packages, and when cautioned by the officer, he reportedly said, "I am not dealing." He was then arrested and charged.

"Why did you do this, Sir?" Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie asked Peart, after the circumstances of the case were outlined.

"It was one time, I took a chance, and it won't happen again," Peart replied.

"How much were you going to get for this?" RM Tie asked him.

"Four thousand British pounds (J$743,000)," said Peart.

"Your fingerprints will be taken today. You will be brought back here on November 3," said RM Tie, before Peart was eventually taken back into custody.

A Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) private and three other men accused of robbing a Rubis petrol station in Port Morant, St Thomas, were granted bail after they appeared in the Yallahs Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Private Chiwale Lindsay, 25, from Port Morant, who is accused of being the mastermind behind the robbery, was granted $500,000 bail. He is barred from living in St Thomas and is expected to report to the Duhaney Park Police Station and observe a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Curfew

Lindsay has been ordered to turn over his travel documents and a stop order has been placed at all ports of exit.

His co-accused, Omar McHardy, 18, was granted $350,000 bail, with the condition to report to the Franklyn Town Police Station, and to observe a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily. Doshane Mitchell, 18, and a 17-year-old boy were granted $450,000 bail each and are also to report to the Franklyn Town Police Station and observe the curfew.

Allegations are that on September 5, 2014, two armed men robbed the station's supervisor and cashier of approximately $100,000, before escaping in a grey station wagon.

A car fitting that description was intercepted on the Lyssons main road with the four accused on board. A preliminary search revealed two 9mm pistols with 12 live rounds. The men were taken into custody and another search revealed $67,000.00 in cash. The men are to return to court on November 28, 2014.
