Court hears ... LOVE-SICK MAN STEALS WOMAN'S VIBRATORS

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

A St Catherine man accused of breaking into a woman's house and stealing items, including two vibrators, was remanded in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

He is Ricardo Knowles from Portmore.

When the matter came up for mention in court, there was suppressed laughter by persons attending the sitting.

After the allegations were read in court, Resident Magistrate Ann-marie Nembhard ordered that the accused man be remanded until June 18, when the matter will be tried.

Stolen items

The court heard that on three occasions since January, the accused broke into the complainant's house and stole items of clothing, including panties, perfume, pillow cases and other personal effects.

It was also revealed that the man had mentioned to the complainant before that he had an undying admiration for her and would stop at nothing to get to her.

Things took a turn for the worse in early April when he broke in and stole two vibrators and left a note under the pillow of the complainant.

She took the note to the police and compared the writing with an earlier one that he had written to her expressing his admiration.

An investigation was launched which resulted in the accused man being charged with housebreaking and larceny.

Firearm owner accused of shooting at wife gets bail

A man who allegedly used his licensed firearm to shoot at his wife was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

He is Humphrey Barriffe of McCooks Pen, St Catherine.

When the matter came up in court, the accused man's lawyer, Earl Hamilton, made a successful bail application.

He told the court that Barriffe was not a flight risk and that he cooperated fully with the investigations and would return for his trial.

Argument

Bail was granted on condition that he surrender his travel documents and appear in the Corporate Area Gun Court on May 3.

Allegations are that on April 6, 2014, about 7:45 p.m., the accused was at home with his family when an argument developed. The accused man reportedly drew his 9mm Glock pistol and fired three rounds at his wife.

The matter was subsequently reported to the Spanish Town police and Barriffe went to the station and was held. Following a question and answer session, he was charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, assault at common-law and shooting with intent.

"Well, he can't pay for that," the complainant said.

"Yes, we can work it out." RM Pusey replied.

Subsequently, RM Pusey ordered the accused to do 40 hours of community service.

JPS to regularise electricity in Olympic Gardens, surrounding areas

As part of its ongoing drive to reduce the illegal use of electricity, the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) will be regularising electricity use by some consumers in sections of Olympic Gardens, Seaward Drive, and surrounding areas, commencing on May 5.

The communities are 440 Drive, Drewsland Phase 3, Seaward Drive, Top Olympic Way, Sterling Avenue, Top Balcombe Drive, Penwood and surrounding areas.

In a release, the JPS stated that it has been working in those areas for over a year, ensuring that the appropriate infrastructure is in place and promoting awareness among residents about the electricity regularisation exercise, which will involve the implementation of the Residential Advanced Metering Infrastructure (RAMI) system.

The company, the release stated, is now appealing to residents who have had their premises certified by the government electrical inspectorate, to complete the legalisation process by signing contracts.

JPS has been grappling with the problem of illegal usage of electricity through methods including operations to remove 'throw-ups', meter inspection, account audits and the implementation of anti-theft networks in sections of the island.

Late opening pays off for Ita Burnett

At a time when most people in her sector are battling traffic to go home, Ita Burnett is busy making her way to work.

When most have arrived home and are ready to spend time with family and friends, Burnett is busy opening her clothing stall in the still-bustling Half-Way Tree. To many, this may seem surprising, especially since most businesses that sell clothes do so during the days. But for Burnett, this represents an opportunity to capitalise on peak business hours.

"When I open at 5 p.m., people stop and buy from me, because all the other places selling clothing downtown Kingston and here in Half-Way Tree are closed, so patrons come here. People going to parties come straight from work, and if they can't go home and change, they stop here. We open this time of the evening and sell up to after midnight," she explained.

"I find that selling clothing didn't do well during the days ... because the sun is very hot, people don't stop to look at what you are selling," Burnett said, opening her stall minutes after five.

The 60-year-old primarily sells female clothing and occasionally offers men's wear. She sources most of her fashions from overseas and makes purchases based on customers' requests.

In 2004, Burnett approached JN Small Business Loans to upgrade her clothing stock. Using her furniture as collateral, she received a loan from the country's premier microfinance agency and continues to use their services.

JNSBL's General Manager, Philip Bernard, commends Burnett on maintaining her business.

"She has been a loyal client over the years. The fact that she works odd hours and has built a customer base speaks volumes about her dedication to do well. I am truly proud of her efforts and her emphasis on customer service. We, therefore, hope her business will continue to grow and, we will offer her continued support when called upon," he said.

I don't see you with any injuries, she has the mark in her face."

The accused, in a bid to clarify, stated, "I meant getting into trouble with the law, Your Honour," to which RM Pusey quipped, "Well, if you tump people inna dem face, that's what happens."

Clarke was remanded into custody, and is to return to court on May 2 for sentencing.

Crime prevention tips for females

The Police are advising members of the public, particularly women to be extra vigilant when operating in public. This advisory came against a sharp increase in robberies against females.

These incidents often occur at home, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and in shopping centres and plazas, a release from the communication arm of the police force stated.

According to the release below are some tips that are to be observed:

ROBBERY

1. When Shopping

Avoid walking with too many bags, as you may become a target.

Trust your instincts - if you sense trouble, try to get to a safe location.

Show confidence - walk at a steady pace, keep your head up and avoid carrying lots of packages- as this can make you look defenceless and divides your attention.

Don't look like an easy target - robbers want someone who will provide the least resistance. If you look like you know where you are going, walk with your head up and eyes alert, you will most likely be left alone.

Be observant. Do not walk and use gadgets.

Remain alert and observe people around you. Know who is walking behind and in front of you. Things to watch for include suspicious persons or vehicles, people who are wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather (ex. A long Trench coat in the middle of summer), and people just loitering around.

Matie fight stops traffic

Horace Fisher, Star Writer

May Pen, Clarendon, was plunged into high drama Wednesday afternoon, after a love triangle ended in a fist fight between two men, who caused a traffic jam as they battled each other over a 30-year-old woman in the town centre.

The drama unfolded after a 34-year-old man and a 50-year-old correctional officer both turned up at the same time to pick up their 'browning' at the Bargain Village Plaza, and neither would relent.

frightened woman

According to police report, the correctional officer, after travelling from Spanish Town, St Catherine, was just in time to see what he thought was his, 'one and only' getting into a white Toyota Corolla motor car.

The enraged warder used his car to block the path of the other motorist, and proceeded to pull the frightened woman from the vehicle.

However, the Corolla driver, also in a rage, emerged from his car, armed with a lug tool, and both men began trading blows on each other. The two warring maties, who drew a large crowd of onlookers, were eventually parted by a passing policeman.

laugh and jeered

"I was patrolling inside the plaza and I see this crowd so I went over to look what was happening. To my surprise, nuh two big men a fight, guess over what - a woman," the policeman told The Weekend Star. "Me just handcuffed them together and marched them down to the station with people a laugh and jeered them all the way."

The cop said both men are booked for the May Pen Resident Magistrate's Court on May 16. They are charged with malicious destruction of property arising from damages to a 2014 VW Amarak pickup truck that was parked nearby.

"Suppose you see how the two fools mash up the man new van. It's about $200,000 worth of damage them cause, and to make matters worse, even the woman a laugh after them," the lawman added.

Prosecutors say Ford offered the bribe during a meeting with the investigating officer.

He allegedly offered the cop 40 per cent of the money seized if he prevented the matter involving the Surinamese from going to court.

As a condition of his bail, Ford is to report to the St Andrew North police three times per week and surrender his travel documents.

JPS crews working in collaboration with members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force removed 1,000 pounds of illegal connections and discovered 12 cases of street light tampering in Flankers, St James, on Saturday.

Street light tampering is one of the primary causes of malfunctioning street lights in the community, as well as others which are served by the Residential Advanced Metering Infrastructure (RAMI).

During the operation, seven arrests were made, bringing the number of arrests for the illegal abstraction of electricity since the start of the year to 185. The operation took place in the Industrial, Pele Street, Providence, Church Hill Lane, Codac Street and McKenzie Drive sections of the community.

Earlier this month, 18 persons were brought before the Linstead Resident Magistrate's Court, for illegal abstraction of electricity.

Thirteen pleaded guilty and were fined $150,000 each.

The other five are to be tried on August 11, 2014.

Persons wishing to report theft, including street light breaches, may send a text message to 292-7483 (CYA RITE), or send an email to: stoptheft@jpsco.com.
