OCR reports 10 per cent decline in missing children

There was a 10 per cent decline in the number of children reported missing last year, compared to 2013, the Office of the Children's Registry (OCR) has reported.

The OCR says the figures were received from the Missing Person Monitoring Unit (MPMU) of the Jamaica Constabulary (JCF).

Last year, 1,984 children were reported missing, while 2,205 children were reported missing in 2013.

Of the total number of children reported missing in 2014, 79 per cent were females and 21 per cent males. The data also revealed that approximately nine out of every 10 children reported missing in 2014 have since returned home.

In addition, it has been observed that there was a noteworthy decline of 57 per cent in the number of children who were still missing when the two years are compared. The number of children reported still being missing at the end of December 2014 reduced by 214 children, from the 467 recorded at the end of December 2013.

Registrar at the OCR, Greig Smith, says: "The statistics support the fact that the Ananda Alert system is indeed working effectively. We look forward to even greater successes as we urge citizens to collaborate with us in safeguarding our children."
