Encouraging signs ahead for blood drive -NBTS

The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), popularly known as the Blood Bank, has reported that nearly 70 people attended the launch of its blood mobile unit in Half-Way Tree last Saturday, and this is a very encouraging sign for the future.

A total of 58 units of blood were collected at the event, which marked the launch of its 2015 blood drive campaign under the theme 'One Love, One Blood, Saves Lives'.

The campaign, which is the result of a partnership between the Kiwanis Movement and Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), aims to mobilise individuals and communities islandwide to support voluntary blood donation as well as educate persons on the importance of pursuing healthy lifestyle practices in order to become eligible donors.

Acting Director of the NBTS, Dr Veronica Taylor, says the launch of this blood mobile provides increased opportunities for voluntary blood donation which will enable the service to move closer to its annual collection target of 35,000 units.

Taylor expressed thanks for the commitment given by the Kiwanis movement and Jamaica National Building Society to providing support for blood mobile throughout the course of the campaign. She invited corporate Jamaica, social groups and communities to also join in to ensure there is sufficient blood to meet the transfusion needs of patients in Jamaica.

She also commended the CEO of RAFFA (a charity in the United Kingdom) Rudi Page and Beverly Johnson of JLB Shipping International Limited for the steering role they played in organising the launch of the blood mobile.
