Clarendon teacher and another man charged with extortion

A teacher from a Clarendon high school and another man are now in custody after they allegedly tried to extort money from a St Elizabeth businessman.

The two men were arrested by the National Strategic Anti-Gang Unit (NSAU) at the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID) and the St Elizabeth Proactive Investigation Team (PIT) in relation to breaches under the Criminal Justice (Suppression of Criminal Organisations) Act last Friday.

Reports are that between Saturday, November 22, and Sunday, January 4, a St. Elizabeth businessman was contacted by the two accused men, who demanded money from him so that his life would be spared, as there was a hit out on his life.

It is further reported that the accused men contacted the businessman several times in relation to paying over the money, as a deposit had been collected already for his assassination, and that he should pay over the balance in order to prevent it. In fear for his life, the businessman agreed to pay over $265, 000 to the men, after which he reported the matter to the police.

investigation

On January 7, the NSAU and the St Elizabeth PIT commenced an investigation into the matter after the businessman reported the matter to them. The businessman's cell phone was sent to the Communication Forensic and Cybercrime Unit (CFCU) for recorded data to be extracted from it in relation to the phone calls and text messages he received.

After careful planning by the investigation team, both accused men were arrested during a sting operation on January 9. One of the men was nabbed in Nain, St Elizabeth, and the teacher was arrrested in May Pen. Their identities are being withheld, pending further investigations.
