Nine accused scammers in custody

Nine persons are now in police custody on Reasonable Suspicion of Breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) (Special Provisions) Act 2013, after members of the Major Organised Crime & Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA West), the Constabulary Financial Investigation Unit and the Mobile Reserve conducted an intelligence-led operation in Rose Heights, St James, on Thursday.

The operation targeted three premises in the community, where it is alleged that the occupants are involved in lottery scam, among other illicit activities.

During the search of the premises, a number of electronic devices were seized, to include: three laptop computers, a magic jack and several cellular phones. An LG Compaq Disc, books containing identity information and US$560 were also seized.

A preliminary examination of the laptop computers and the LG Compaq Disc revealed the presence of several Microsoft Excel files, among other documents, which contain thousands of names, addresses, telephone numbers, and dates of birth of persons apparently living overseas.

The electronic devices seized were secured, and the relevant agencies, to include the MOCA Cyber Forensic Unit, will be engaged to facilitate further analysis.
