A teacher of a Kingston high school, who was accused of assaulting a teenage student, was fined in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
He is Lloyd Wilson, who was charged with assaulting the female student.
The allegations are that Wilson, on the day in question, proceeded to restrain the student who was involved in a fight with another student while class was in session.
"Mi did deh inna the class, and him puff mi chest. Then him drape me up and stand up on a chair," said the complainant.
Upon hearing the student's account, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked the accused: "Do you think you may have gone overboard?"
"I believe so, Your Honour. I held her firmly to restrain her. No blows were thrown at any point during the altercation," Wilson remarked.
"When I was a teacher, they taught me don't touch the people's children. Restraint is not in your territory under the code," Pusey said.
The magistrate ordered Wilson to not only apologise to the student and her mother for the incident, but also to pay a fine of $5,000 to cover the cost of a doctor's visit and the anti-inflammatory drug Cataflam, the student is alleged to have been prescribed for pains she experienced as a result of the altercation.
