A massive fire of unknown origin destroyed sections of Chung's Catering Services Limited at Port Royal Street, in downtown Kingston, early yesterday morning.
Fire personnel from the York Park Fire Brigade responded to the blaze shortly after midnight and conducted cooling-down operations.
The complex in which the fire occurred also houses the Office of the Public Defender and the General Legal Council, but these offices were untouched by the blaze.
Senior Deputy Superintendent Maxwell Hinds, in charge of Operations of the Kingston and St Andrew Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, said the immediate cause and origin of the fire have not been ascertained. Damage is estimated at $5 million.
Dennis Chung, owner of the business, said it will be relocated. He said employees will be transferred elsewhere.
"We are not too sure when the people who we rented that place from, the Bar Association, how long they'll take to recoup. We are trying now to find a location downtown. We're trying the Air Jamaica building. We're making some contacts but we're not sure if they'll have space," he revealed. "I am not too sure how many persons will be out of jobs yet. We have facilities to do our cooking so most of the staff will be transferred there. We have our head office that does quite a lot of work."
