Accused hotel thief cannot sustain any attorney

WESTERN BUREAU:

Dimitri Ffrench, the man who reportedly broke into a hotel room at the Secrets Resort in Montego Bay, and stole a number of items in June has been remanded in police custody until January 8.

Twenty-six-year-old Ffrench, of a Molynes Road address in Kingston, was given the return date when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, after presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie was told that he had not yet settled his legal representation.

It is alleged that sometime in June this year, Ffrench went on the grounds of the Secrets Resort property in Montego Bay and broke into a guest's hotel room, where he stole two iPhones, two iPods, US$1,000 (J$114,000), US$500 (J$56,085.31), and items of jewellery.

When the matter was mentioned on Tuesday, the court was told that Ffrench, who had previously been represented by attorney-at-law Martyn Thomas, was still without legal representation.

On a previous court date, Thomas had asked that his name be removed from the court's record, as Ffrench had not settled his obligations for the attorney to represent him.

"It seems as if you have exhausted all the attorneys through the legal aid, so the option is to speak for yourself or have your family retain an attorney," RM Tie said to the accused, before remanding him in police custody until January 8.
