Constables on corruption rap granted bail

The two constables who appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday, after being held for breaching the Corruption Prevention Act recently, were granted bail in the sum of $100,000 with surety.

Cleburne Wallace and Ramane Henry have been charged with soliciting, as well as soliciting and accepting.

The Crown is alleging that shortly after 3 p.m., on November 14, the constables were on bicycle patrol duties in the Half-Way Tree area when they allegedly stopped a Toyota Coaster passenger bus.

Wallace reportedly requested the driver's licence of the bus driver and the documents for the motor vehicle. The driver complied, a routine check on the documents was carried out by Wallace.

It was revealed that the driver of the bus had several outstanding tickets and that there had been eight warrants out for his arrest.

In order for the constables not to prosecute the driver, he was told he had to pay over some money. It is reported that they solicited and accepted $100,000.

A report was consequently made to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency and a probe was launched, after which a file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, who ruled that both constables be charged accordingly.

Both men are scheduled to return to court on December 19.
