Man who stoned embassy gets birthday court date

The Cuban national accused of destroying the glass door of his country's embassy was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yet again.

Charged with malicious destruction of property is Narciso Clarke, unemployed of no fixed address, who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey on Friday.

Allegations are that on October 22, around 2 p.m., Clarke went to the Cuban Embassy and threw several stones on the embassy's glass door, valued at $15,000, breaking it.

He was caught on November 13 when he returned to the embassy to wreak havoc and was subsequently arrested and charged.

On previous court appearances, Clarke became boisterous and started to throw tantrums, claiming that the Cuban government had documents for him.

Clarke was born in Cuba and raised in the Cayman Islands, but was brought to Jamaica in 1996. He has been living in the country since then. He claims that he's had difficulties getting his Jamaican citizenship.

In court, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said giving himself a custodial sentence would not solve his problem as he would be back on the streets again.

Clarke could not be deported to Cuba, as according to immigration authorities, he has been out of the Spanish-speaking territory for some time, which makes it difficult to have him deported.

Clarke is due to return to court on December 18, his birthday, when the matter will be mentioned.
