The St Thomas Chapter of the Jamaica Guidance Counsellors Association in Education (JGCAE), with the assistance of the Child Development Agency (CDA), yesterday held a street march in the parish square to mark the end of Child's Month.
Led by the Rising Star Marching Band, students from several schools across the parish, along with their guidance counsellors, marched from Church Corner to the heart of Morant Bay, before making their way to Rudolph Elder's Park for a short ceremony.
Students bore placards and banners, prominently displaying the theme of the march, 'We Love Our Children, Stop the Violence'. Canadian volunteers from the Jamaica Foundation for Lifelong Learning, also assisted in handing out flyers, brochures, and other literature provided by the CDA on matters affecting children, including child abuse. Sheldon Howell, President of the St Thomas Chapter of the JGCAE, explained that the march was aimed at sensitising the public.
"It is just to sensitise the community of St Thomas as it relates to the various issues that our children are going through, the plight of our children, and we also want to use this initiative to identify possible solutions as to how we can, through partnership, address the situation," he told THE STAR.
The march was especially poignant for those who were still haunted by the murder of Celeena Headman, and the recent stabbing of a three-year-old child by another in the parish.
