Chinese on fraud rap gets bail extension

A Chinese businesswoman who is charged with several counts of fraud arising from the seizure of cases of rubbing alcohol with fraudulently used labels, bearing the name PA Benjamin, had her bail extended when she appeared in court on Tuesday.

When U Wen appeared before Resident Magistrate Lyle Armstrong on Tuesday, it was revealed that a certificate from the Government Forensic Laboratory was still outstanding.

Her lawyer, Lancelot Clarke Jr, expressed shock as to how long it has taken for the certificate to be before the court for the matter to proceed.

''It is really strange that from November until now, the police is yet to get this certificate so as to let the matter proceed. It should have been dealt with by now,'' Clarke said.

He also suggested that the matter be adjourned sine die. However, it was decided that the matter be put off until September 18,when it will again be mentioned.

Allegations are that in November last year, personnel from the Organised Crime Investigation Division swooped down on a wholesale operated by the accused.

The detectives checked a number of bottled products marked Benjamin Rubbing Alcohol and discovered that the labels were allegedly forged.

Further investigations resulted in her being charged with breaches of the Excise Custom Duty Act, Infringing on the Trademark of PA Benjamin and misleading the consumer.

Attorney-at-Law Hadrian Christie is watching proceedings on behalf of P A Benjamin.
