Two Jamaican siblings who went off to the United States in 1985 on vacation are now seeking to become citizens in the country.
Jamaican sisters Wendy Brown, 42, and Nicole Brown, 35, have been residing in the US for nearly 30 years together in Nassau Country, Long Island, New York. The pair have now decided to take advantage of a week-long Daily News/CUNY Citizenship Now! event at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the state.
The call-in event provides easy access to free and confidential immigration information for those who seek information regarding United States citizenship and other immigration matters.
"I felt this was the year to push and to do different things," Nicole Brown told the New York Daily News.
Her sister, Wendy, cited financial issues that prevented her from applying before. The US$680 needed to pay for the application was often used to pay bills or rent, she revealed.
"In Jamaica, there's a caste system," she said. "I wanted a better life for myself."
