The upscale communities of Unity Hall and Montego Gardens in St James were the scene of electricity theft discoveries this week, the Jamaica Public Service company (JPS) said.
On Monday, JPS crew working alongside members of the security forces, unearthed a meter bypass inside a concrete stanchion, at a home in Unity Hall. The bypass carried power to a number of high-energy consumption items, including a water pump which was used to fill an 80,000 gallon water truck, used in the sale of water.
The company said it has not been confirmed whether the water was illegally abstracted from the National Water Commission.
In Montego Gardens, an apartment building was discovered to have three bridged meter sockets. Two arrests were made.
The JPS said on Sunday, an electrician in Anchovy created a stir in his community, after he was discovered by JPS crews to be stealing electricity at his residence. The electrician who was found to have bridged his meter socket, was arrested and charged with the illegal abstraction of electricity.
Anti-theft operations in St James have resulted in 112 arrests since the start of the year. The number of arrests for electricity theft islandwide now stands at 292.
