An alleged case of sexual assault believed to have taken place on the campus of a tertiary institution has forced students to increase their vigilance.
Speaking with THE STAR, a source, who wished to remain anonymous, said that sometime during the first week of May, the female student was believed to have been overpowered by her attacker who assaulted her.
Reports are that on the day in question, a 20-year-old female student was inside one of the female restrooms on the campus, when a 22-year-old male student made his way inside, dragging her to the male restroom, raping her.
Head of the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), Deputy Superintendent Veronica Gilzean, was reluctant to divulge further information to our news team, stating: "We can't confirm or deny the report, because as you know the nature of CISOCA cases."
According to the police's Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the matter was reported and is currently being investigated by CISOCA.
A CCU representative told our news team that the accused was arrested on suspicion of rape, abduction, and buggery. The male student was reportedly taken in by police personnel on May 14 for questioning. It is unclear if any charges have been laid against him.
Meanwhile, a female student at the institution complained to THE STAR that security appears to be far too lax, imploring the relevant authorities to reassess security measures at the school.
