A man who is charged with the murder of his brother allegedly told investigators that he heard voices telling him to kill his sibling.

Troy Sewell is charged with the death of David Sewell of Portmore, St Catherine.

When the case was mentioned in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, he was remanded for psychiatric evaluation.

Clerk of Court Venese Murray told the court he heard voices.

"He is said to have told the police that voices told him to kill his brother, your honour, " Murray said.

Murray outlined that Sewell gave a statement that he used a stone to hit his brother in the head repeatedly and when he collapsed, the house was set ablaze.

The court heard that Sewell was an outpatient of the Bellevue Hospital and that the post-mortem and forensic certificates in the murder case were still outstanding.

Allegations are that on February 20, about 1:45 a.m., the police got reports that a one-room board structure was on fire.

After the fire was extinguished, Sewell's charred remains were discovered. An investigation was launched and Troy was reportedly held at the Bellevue Hospital.

He was brought back to Portmore and following further investigations, he was charged with murder and arson.

Sewell is to reappear on April 21, when the matter will again be mentioned.
