Accused trying to make $17 million insurance claim
The Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court is trying to determine if an accused man, with the assistance of his wife and another person, allegedly faked his death in order to cash in on a $17 million life insurance claim.
Charged with conspiracy to defraud, attempting to obtain money by false pretence, and making a false declaration is 45-year-old Kim Wayne Phillips.
He pleaded not guilty to all three offences. The court was told that a written claim was made to the insurance company stating that the accused man was dead and beneficiaries are to receive $17 million.
Allegations are that his wife and another person presented a death certificate to the insurance company. The court heard that a death certificate and a post-mortem report with a signature of the doctor who performed the autopsy was presented to the insurance company.
In seeking bail, Phillips' attorney told the court that the police went to his client and found out that he was not dead, following which he was arrested.
Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked Phillips's attorney, "Where is his wife?"
The attorney told the court that his instructions were that his client's wife resides in England.
Bail objection
The investigating officer also objected to bail. He told the court that the police have reason to believe that the accused man has interfered with the investigation.
Allegations are that phone records available reveal the accused sent a text to his alleged wife asking, "You get the money yet?"
Phillips is to return to court on April 23.
