WESTERN BUREAU:

The case against embattled attorney Lennox Gayle, who is embroiled in a massage parlour scandal following his arrest for false and misleading conduct last year, has been set for preliminary enquiry on April 24.

Gayle and six of his co-defendants - Kadian Grey, Shavel Harriot, Nyoka Jolly, Sheline Reid, Kiwania Cole, and Amanda Wallace - were given the new date when they appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court last Thursday.

A warrant had previously been sent out by the court for a seventh defendant in the case, Shanique Fennell, who was absent from last Thursday's sitting. Fennell had failed to appear in court on two previous occasions.

Clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm told presiding magistrate Natalie Hart-Hines that a preliminary enquiry date could be set, as the prosecution was ready to proceed.

"I have in my possession, information CDs to be served on defence counsel ... there are at least 10 prosecution witnesses," said Malcolm. "I am proposing for a preliminary enquiry date to be set, and for subpoenas for the witnesses."

It was subsequently concluded that, while the case against Gayle would be set for preliminary examination on April 24, the matters against his co-defendants would be set for mention on that same date.

The allegations against Gayle are that he was running a massage parlour in Montego Bay, where prostitution was said to be taking place. He was arrested on April 16, 2014, and has been charged alongside co-defendants Grey, Harriot, Jolly, Reid, Cole, Wallace, and Fennell.
