Accused scammer gets bail extension

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man who was arrested after paraphernalia connected to the illicit lottery scam were reportedly found at his house will return to the St James Circuit Court on March 20, when he is expected to settle his legal representation.

O'Bryan Cover from Catadupa is charged with possession of identity information in relation to the lottery scam. His bail was extended yesterday.

It is alleged that on November 22, 2013, Cover was arrested after 26 lead sheets with contact information of persons living overseas were found at his house, during a joint police/military operation.

When Cover's case was brought before presiding High Court Justice Leighton Pusey on Thursday, attorney-at-law Karl Singh, who had previously been identified as the defendant's lawyer, said Cover had not finished settling arrangements with him.

"Representation has not yet been settled. Might the matter be set for March?" asked Singh.

"The court's position is that you get a period of time to settle your legal representation ...; we are not going to have matters waiting for years, for legal representation to be settled," the clearly unimpressed Justice Pusey replied.

"We will set it for March 20 ...; his legal representation is to be settled, or a legal aid assignment is to be done on the next occasion," Justice Pusey continued.

Cover's case is one of several matters related to the illicit lottery scam, which have been brought before the courts, in light of recent requests from the United States for accused scammers to be extradited.
