Up to late yesterday, investigators were unable to say how a train laden with alumina, derailed and crashed in St Catherine yesterday. No one was injured in the mishap.

Reports are that the train derailed near the salt factory in Ellerslie Gardens, Spanish Town about 2:40 p.m.

As news of the accident spread throughout the community scores of curious onlookers gathered.

"Bwoy this is a dangerous thing in the community, as see the alumina a seep out and it can damage your health," one man bystander said. His view was echoed by others who referred to how close to several houses the trained carriage came to a halt.

Among the onlookers were personnel from Jamaica Railway Corporation. They told The Star that the train was transporting alumina from West Indies Alumina Company to Port Esquivel, St Catherine. They confirmed that the train slid off the track but said further investigations will be conducted to determine exactly what caused this.

Many of the residents told The Star that they were very thankful that there was no injuries or death as a result of the accident.

Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force maintained a presence on the scene.
