Accused car thief offered bail

WESTERN BUREAU: A St James man accused of stealing a car that was later recovered in Moneague, St Ann, was offered bail when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court last Friday.

Christopher Reid, 42, from Lilliput, is charged with driving away a motor vehicle without the owner's consent and larceny of a motor vehicle. He was offered $80,000 bail and returns to court on December 3.

Allegations are that on October 1, the complainant discovered his car was missing from his yard and made a report to the police. The vehicle was later found along the Moneague main road and the police in that area were summoned.

During the police's efforts to recover the car, the court heard that a shoot-out reportedly ensued between the police and Reid, who was injured during the encounter. He was taken to the Ocho Rios Police Station where he was charged.

In applying for bail, Reid's attorney, Tamika Spencer, said that the defendant is refuting the allegations.

"He denies the allegations. I am asking for him to be admitted to bail in this matter," Spencer told presiding magistrate Ann-Marie Granger.

"Does he have any previous convictions?" RM Granger asked.

"Yes, for wounding in 1998," Spencer admitted.

The court was also told that the arresting officer's statement and scene-of-crime documents were outstanding from the prosecution's case-file.

"He will report at the Barrett Town Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.," said RM Granger, in granting bail.
