Scotia Insurance awards 16 scholars with bursaries

Acqueme Johnson is a man with a plan. At 18 he has already applied to a civil engineering programme and has managed to secure a $200,000 scholarship towards this from Scotia Insurance.

This is unique because Acqueme is still in sixth form at St Mary High. Johnson, who is an honour student, was one of 16 scholars to receive scholarships and bursaries, totalling $750,000, from the Scotia Insurance Education Wealth Plan competition. "When I received the call, I was elated, because the course is quite expensive" he said.

The promotion that ran from July through August, encourages Scotia Mutual Funds and ScotiaMINT customers to save and plan towards education, with the chance of winning scholarships or bursaries to tertiary institutions and high schools.

To be eligible the account holder or policyholder must have an active policy/Mutual Fund for at least one year, and must have been up to date with their minimum monthly contributions.

Customers had the opportunity to win one of the following:

Two tertiary scholarships valued at $200,000 each.

Two tertiary bursaries valued at $50,000 each.

Two high school scholarships valued at $50,000.

Ten GSAT bursaries valued at $15,000 each.

Acqueme along with Kymana James, who is a first-year medical student, were winners in the top category and each received $200,000 towards their university education.

According to Scotia Insurance President Hugh Reid, "Scotia Insurance continues to take great pleasure in assisting with scholarships and bursaries because while it is a truism that our children are our future, too often this is observed in the breach rather than as a plan. We are invested in supporting young people, especially when it is assisting them attain educational ambitions".

The other students who were on hand to collect their awards were Kenteisha Johnson, Inga Samuda, Alexia Brooks, Renee Scott, Karen Hoyte Braham, Donte Morris, and Kemar Farquharson.
