Paulwell boasts 191 technology centres

Technology Minister Philip Paulwell said the 191 technology centres islandwide are a work in progress.


He was speaking last Thursday at the launch of the Information Technology and Resource Centre at the Ebony Vale Community Centre in St Catherine. "When we started it was hard, it is to ensure that every single Jamaican barring none should have access to technology," Paulwell said.


He said he just got back from South Korea where he represented the Caribbean and he was pleased with steps the island's technological advancement. "I am now the longest serving telecoms minister in the world and I am pleased about this achievement," Paulwell said


Very effective


He said persons should utilise the new facility as it is very effective way to educate oneself.


He lauded the Universal Service Fund which provided the $4.8M to fund the 21-computer project.


Everold Simms, director of projects, for the Universal Service Fund endorsed the project. "We responded according to the size of the community, the safety and space available and potential of the project," Simms said.


Since the formation of the fund 10 years ago, the government has earned $11.7M so far from calls coming into Jamaica.


It was the consensus that the new addition to the St Catherine community will uplift the area.
