Marijuana smuggler gets one year

An elderly man who allegedly attempted to smuggle 22 pounds (9.98 kilograms) of marijuana to London, England, which he claimed was for his own personal use, was sentenced to one year', imprisonment last Friday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Charged with possession, dealing, taking steps to export and conspiracy to export marijuana is 56-year-old Elijah Powell.

He pleaded not guilty to the conspiracy component. However, he was guilty in relation to the other charges.

Powell was fined $15,000 or three months for possession and 12 months' imprisonment for taking steps to export.

No evidence was offered on the dealing and conspiracy charges. They were admonished and discharged.

Powell told the court, "Your honour, I was doing it for medicinal purposes, I was gonna boil it and drink."

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams asked the accused, "22 pounds?"

"Yes, your honour," he replied.
