Cabbies warned to abide by Road Traffic Act

Taxi operators who ply routes in and out of Spaldings in Clarendon are being warned by the police that breaches of the Road Traffic Act will not be tolerated.

The warning came from Sergeant Rovan Salmon of the Spaldings police, while speaking at a church service held for taxi operators at the Shiloh Apostolic Church at Nine Miles in that community on Sunday.

Sergeant Salmon urged cabbies to ensure that they abide by the rules and regulations as set out in the Road Traffic Act in an effort not to feel the full force of the law.

"I am not supporting any taxi operator who is in breach of the law, even if you are a member of my family. I am not going down that road. My duty is to set example, and I am going to lead by example," said Sergeant Salmon.

In the meantime, the law officer is calling on parents whose children are having disciplinary problems to take them to the police.

"Bring them to us. When the police speak to them it makes a difference; and after speaking to them and we see that it is not going anywhere, we can tell you about the most appropriate action to take," noted Sergeant Salmon.

He pointed out that children from 14 and upward are causing serious concerns in the society.

"Nowadays, when the gunman holds you up, if he is over 30 you do not have to beg for your life; he will not kill you. All he needs is your property and he is gone. But when a 14, 15 or 16-year-old 'gunboy' hold you up, you have to beg for your life; he will kill you before the water chills. Parents, you have a responsibility," said Sergeant Salmon.
