Policeman killed in car crash

A policeman was killed and another injured in a collision on the Green Island main road in Westmoreland yesterday.

The dead cop has been identified as Constable Leakim Mathis, who is from the Westmoreland Division. The injured cop, a constable, is also from the division.

Reports from the Green Island police are that about 7:10 a.m., both constables were travelling in a Toyota Starlet motorcar towards Negril when the vehicle collided with another motorcar travelling in the opposite direction.

They were taken to hospital where Mathis was pronounced dead and the other policeman was admitted in serious but stable condition.

The Police High Command has extended condolences to the family and friends of Constable Mathis and says it is deeply saddened to have lost another member to a motor vehicle crash.
