A St Catherine motorist was freed of abduction charges in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday after his lawyer made a successful no-case submission on his behalf.
When the matter came up for mention, attorney-at-law Courtney Maxwell told the court that although his client allegedly drove the car into a cane field, it was not enough. He told the court that his client would have had to show sexual intent to the complainant for abduction to be proven against him.
Resident Magistrate Vaughn Smith said he concurred with the defence and then ordered that the accused be freed of the offence.
The allegations are that in 2012 the accused was driving a taxi along the Old Harbour Road in St Catherine.
He picked up the complainant and upon reaching a section of the journey he drove into a cane field.
The woman jumped from the vehicle and ran on to the road and made a subsequent report to the police.
An investigation was launched following which the accused was charged with abduction.
