Mother, daughters punished for injuring 9-y-o sibling

A mother and her two daughters were each fined on Friday in the Corporate Area Resident's Magistrate Court for charges stemming from an incident where a younger sibling was reportedly tortured.

The sisters are charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, while their mother was charged with failing to report the incident. All three ladies pleaded guilty and offered the court an explanation.

The court was told that on the day in question, the sisters used a hot spoon to burn their nine-year-old sibling.

The court heard that nobody took the child to get medical attention until the matter reached the ears of the police. The infant subsequently spent 11 days in hospital as a result of the injuries sustained.

The mother told the court, "Your Honour, I was at work when I heard what happened, and when I reached home I was confused, they are all my children and I didn't want them to get in any trouble."

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey then handed down the fine.

The sisters were each fined $20,000 or six months' imprisonment, while the mother was fined $10,000 or six months' imprisonment.
