Thieves broke into tombs at the May Pen Cemetery along Spanish Town Road on Monday in an attempt to steal metal which is used in the popular scrap-metal trade.
The incident reportedly happened sometime after 7 a.m. and attempts to steal anything were thwarted by residents who alerted the police.
"They attempted to get the metal. This happens every now and then when they try to get the scrap metal. This is really sad but they didn't succeed," said head of the West Kingston Police, Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor.
The senior policeman said that attempts were also made to get valuable jewellery from deceased persons.
"One time it was really high in Spanish Town, but it had stopped for a while. What happens is that they know the person who has died and they try to steal from them. However, this was not a successful attempt," the senior superintendent said.
Meanwhile, a well known funeral director agreed with the senior policeman about the reasons for stealing from graves. He also pointed to other reasons such as the use of the skulls and bones in witchcraft.
