Schools affected by Riverton City landfill smog to remain closed

The Ministry of Education is advising schools that were closedlast Fridayas a result of the smog emanating from the Riverton City landfill to remain closedtoday.

In a release yesterday, the ministry said this is to facilitate the clean-up of some schoolsand to determine their readiness forresumption, particularlythose that are located within the immediate vicinity of the disposal site. The ministry wants to avoid the to-ing and fro-ing of children from home to school and back home, especially, while parents are at work.

Schools that are not in the immediate vicinity of the disposal site, the ministry said, may decide to open or close depending on the wind direction, as advised by the Met Office.

"Regarding the GSAT examinationsscheduled forThursdayandFriday,we awaita decision to be taken byCabinet on Monday," the release said.

Meanwhile, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) says an aerial view of the landfill was conducted today by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), which confirmed that a significant portion of the landfill is on fire.

Twenty-one firefighters are involved in the operation assisted by the police and military. ODPEM says firefighting will continue throughout the night as the team works assiduously to get the situation under control.
