The police say its intelligence confirms that criminals are targeting members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, on and off the job.
The statement comes following the killing of Constable Collin Raynor yesterday.
Raynor, stationed in Linstead, was killed in Hartland, Spanish Town, St Catherine, while fishing at a community pond with his brother. His brother was also injured during the attack. His condition was not known up to news time.
Commissioner of Police, Dr Carl Williams, has expressed shock at the killing, extending condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
He is assuring the public that the police have not been deterred by the incident and they will be resolute in their effort to win the battle against violent crimes.
Head of the St Catherine North Police Division, Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, said the untimely death has resulted in counselling sessions for his colleagues.
"The murder hit the division badly, we have engaged the Chaplaincy unit to engage in counselling," Nesbeth said.
The police are appealing to anyone with information to call 119, 811, Crime Stop 311, or the nearest police station.
