The Minister of National Security, Peter Bunting, said plans are afoot to make district constables entitled to receive pension.
The minister said that with 98 per cent of the district constables working more than 40 hours per week, it is a given that their welfare must be considered.
He made the statement after opening the Fellowship Hall Police Post in St Catherine on Wednesday.
"There was a discussion at Cabinet over the issue of pension for district constables. We are now waiting on the Police Service Commission to see how the changes are to be implemented," Bunting said.
Bunting said the DCs work as station guards, in close protection and also in general policing. Therefore, the status needed to be regularised.
Meanwhile, several members of the District Constable Association said for years they have been getting promises and nothing has happened.
Unlike their uniformed counterparts, the DCs work for up to 40 years sometimes, but get no pension when they become senior citizens.
