WESTERN BUREAU:
A St James man who is accused of defrauding his former company by buying $169,000 worth of petrol under the company's name without their knowledge, had his bail extended when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Thirty-six-year-old Robert Mitchell from Lilliput is charged with fraud, in which is it alleged that he took the petrol without his company's authority while he was employed to them as a driver. His bail has been extended to April 21.
According to the allegations, between October 28 and November 9, 2014, Mitchell went on sick leave, but during that time he took petrol from a service station, in the name of his company, valued at $169,000, without their knowledge or approval.
On Tuesday, Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie was informed that while Mitchell had begun making efforts to repay his former employer, he had an outstanding balance of $139,000 to pay back.
"How much have you brought today, sir?" asked RM Tie.
"I have $30,000, your honour," said Mitchell.
"It is $139,000 that is outstanding. How do you propose to pay that off?" the magistrate inquired.
"I will try to pay $25,000 per month," said Mitchell.
"You are going to have to do much better than you did today. I am going to set this matter for April 21," said RM Tie, as she extended Mitchell's bail.
