Police nab assumed drug trafficker at airport

A man who was found in possession of approximately three pounds (1.3kg) of cocaine at the Norman Manley International Airport was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Clevaun Stewart, 33, is charged with possession of, dealing in, attempting to export, and conspiracy to export cocaine.

Allegations are that Stewart was about to board a flight destined for Toronto, Canada, when police at the airport stopped him and asked him a series of security questions.

A search was conducted and parcels of coffee, which reportedly felt abnormal, were searched and the substance discovered.

The attorney representing Stewart was unsuccessful in his bail application before Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece, who ordered that Stewart be remanded.

According to Wolfe-Reece, the forensic certificate was outstanding. She said this was a serious matter.

A trial date was set for April 22.
