The St Catherine Parish Council was put on notice about a rise in cases of ringworm (tinea capitis) throughout the parish.
This revelation was made by Richard Baker, chief public health inspector, for St Catherine.
Baker was speaking last Thursday at the monthly general council meeting in Spanish Town. He said a number of cases have turned up at health centres and other facilities in the parish.
Baker said whereas there are no official numbers yet, it is something to take seriously as the fungus is contagious. He implored councillors to be vigilant of schools within their divisions.
It was revealed that barbers and hairdressers are to be held most accountable for the outbreak.
Baker said scissors, shears, combs and other equipment must be duly sterilised to get rid of the fungus.
It was the consensus that the councillors come on board to help deal with the health problem.
