Cop accused of murder granted bail

The policeman at the centre of a controversial fatal shooting which was reportedly caught on video was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $250,000 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court.

Charged with murder is Constable Kevon Gordon. Defence attorney Valrie Neita-Robertson is representing the accused in the matter.

The altercation involving Gordon and the now deceased man, which was allegedly caught on camera, has since made its way into the public domain.

However, yesterday, it was revealed in court that the now deceased was about to stab an officer at the scene and that was why the policeman discharged his weapon.

The court was told that the incident that took place on March 6, happened in full view of others in Mahoney district, at a party that was being held without permit.

According to the prosecution, statements taken from persons at the scene go hand in hand with the footage of the incident, which shows that the deceased man did not have a knife.

Allegations are that there was a verbal dispute following which the policeman discharged one round from his service pistol and the man fell.

The court heard that the policeman was pointed out by a witnesses, following which he was arrested.

Relatives of the deceased man have retained the services of Tom Tavares-Finson to oversee the proceedings.

In seeking bail for her client, Neita-Robertson outlined that Gordon has cooperated with the investigations and that the incident occurred during the course of his duty.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey subsequently granted the accused bail with surety.

A fingerprint order was made and Gordon is to surrender his travel documents.

A stop order has been placed at all ports.
