Cop, six persons injured in downtown shoot-out

Detectives from the Kingston Central Criminal Investigation Bureau are probing last night's shooting of seven persons, including a police officer, along a section of King Street, downtown Kingston.


Commanding officer of the Kingston Central Division, Superintendent Michael Scott, told THE STAR that gunshots were fired in a confrontation between the police and gunmen resulting in the wounding of seven. Their injuries were not thought to be life- threatening.


"I understand that the police and gunmen had a problem and they exchanged bullets," Superintendent Scott said.


Men armed


According to the police's Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), four men armed with guns engaged the lawmen on patrol in the area in a shoot-out. After the shooting, it was discovered that seven people received gunshot wounds, inclusive of the police officer.


Subsequently, the injured persons were taken to hospital for treatment.


Investigators said the shooting occurred approximately 6:45 p.m.


"Nothing more than mi hear gunshot a bust," a stall operator who plies his trade nearby told THE STAR. "The people dem haffi run fi dem life after them hear so much gunshot. Remember say gunshot nuh partial nobody now yu nuh?"


Investigations are ongoing.
