Three firefighters from the York Park Fire Station in Kingston were injured yesterday afternoon after the water truck they were travelling in fell into a ditch.

"At this time, three members of staff are presently at hospital being treated for various injuries that they received as a result of this accident," said Senior Deputy Superintendent Patrick Gooden of the York Park Fire Station.

The extent of their injuries is unclear.

The incident happened in the vicinity of Callaloo Mews, along Spanish Town Road, and resulted in traffic pile-up on the busy thoroughfare.

It is being reported, that about 12:30 p.m. the team of firefighters were heading back from a fire at Ferry along the Mandela Highway. Upon reaching Spanish Town Road, the water truck collided with another truck before turning on its side in a ditch and damaging the fencing of a property along the roadway.

"Mi did inna the middle lane a come up, and the fire truck did inna the left lane. Mi just see when it start wobble inna the road, mi nuh know what happen to it," said the driver of the other truck involved.

He added that the two vehicles, while parallel to each other, made contact before the fire truck overturned into the ditch.

The crash also caused damage to a water main that resulted in loss of water to the neighbouring community.

The deputy superintendent further explained that this crash will set back the York Park Fire Station.

"Significant damage to this unit now has caused us to be in a position where we are unlikely to respond accordingly to fires that will occur. Our fleet now is being depleted as a result of this unit being involved in this accident. So we are now being challenged as a result of this accident," Gooden stated.
