Accused drug trafficker nabbed at airport

A man accused of being in possession of two pounds of cocaine while trying to board a Caribbean Airlines (CAL) flight to Canada was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Charged with taking steps to export, dealing in and possession of cocaine is 27-year-old Derrick Shand.

The Crown alleges that on July 16, shortly after 8 p.m., the accused man checked in to board a CAL flight to Canada when irregularities were seen in a pair of sneakers believed to be belonging to the accused.

Upon inspection of the sneakers, transparent parcels were removed from his shoes containing the cocaine.

The defence attorney for the accused argued that the narcotics was not found in the shoes he was wearing, but rather in shoes in a container. He also denied that the pair of shoes belonged to his client.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered that Shand returns to court on September 10.
