Up to press time last night, firefighters were still feverishly trying to contain a blaze raging at the Riverton City landfill along Spanish Town Road in Kingston.

Thick clouds of black smoke blanketed the skies of the Corporate Area yesterday, as the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) dispatched several fire engines to the scene in an attempt to contain the inferno.

The fire reportedly started about 3:20 p.m.

When THE STAR contacted the JFB, Superintendent Sean Martin told our news team the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

"It is still raging at the moment. Currently, we have four units out there. One from Spanish Town, two from York Park, and one is from Rollington Town," the superintendent said. "We are not able to say what the cause of the fire is at this time,"

Our news team gathered that the fire was contained to the general tipping area of the dump.

"The units are still on the scene at this time, and we think that it will be a protracted incident based on our assessment; so we don't expect it to be concluded any time tonight," Martin stated.

In order to effectively combat the fire, THE STAR was told that a need for cover material to be sourced via the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) was imperative.

"What we really need to put the fire out is cover material like dirt and tractors to spread the cover material. The water is just a temporary fix to abate the fire," Martin explained.
