Would-be police attackers freed

A St Catherine couple accused of assaulting a group of police personnel in Kitson Town district, walked free from the Petty Sessions Court in Spanish Town following a successful no-case submission by their lawyer on Wednesday.

Those freed are Donald Richards and Merl Richards, both labourers of Kitson Town in the parish.

During the trial, one policeman told the court that he was attacked by Donald Richards while he looked for his brother. Another policeman said that Donald was the person they were looking for.

Attorney-at-Law Lancelot Clarke then submitted to the presiding Lay Magistrates that there are discrepancies in the evidence that was given, therefore his clients did not have a case to answer.

His submission was upheld on the grounds that there were glaring inconsistencies in the Crown's case. The two accused were then freed.

Allegations are that on May 15, last year, police personnel from the Guanaboa Vale Police Station went to warn a suspect in a case of threat.

During this time they were allegedly assaulted by both accused. The couple were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, assaulting police and resisting arrest.

Both accused denied assaulting the police during the incident.
