Alleged corrupt cops granted bail

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Two Portmore-based policemen, charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, were granted bail in the sum of $250,000 each when they appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Sergeant Orel Ayres and Constable Oscar Beckford will return to court on January 13, 2015, when the matter will again be mentioned.

When the matter came up for mention before Resident Magistrate Natalee Brooks, attorney-at-law Oswest Senior Smith made a successful bail application. He told the court that his clients were serving members who will honour their bail conditions.

Bail was subsequently offered to Beckford who is to report three times weekly to the Mandeville police. Ayres is to report to the Bridgeport police daily.

Allegations are that the men attempted to solicit money from another policeman to dispose of a case file that implicated him.

The matter was reported to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency. An investigation was launched and the men were subsequently held during a sting operation.
