Suspected obeah leads to stabbing

A St Catherine woman, accused of stabbing her landlady for a cellular phone, was remanded when she appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

She is Marsha Williams, a 38-year-old hairdresser from Green Acres in the parish. When the matter came up before Resident Magistrate Horace Mitchell, Williams was ordered remanded until November 11, 2014.

Allegations are that on October 20, 2014, about 3 a.m., Williams was at home when the complainant was seen throwing water on three bats in the yard where both parties live. Williams believed this to be signs of obeah. Williams began taping the landlady's action on her phone.

The court heard that that complainant grabbed the phone and asked a relative to look what Williams was videotaping. It was further heard that Williams reportedly became angry and grabbed a knife, rushed into the complainant's house, and stabbed her repeatedly.

The complainant was subsequently hospitalised as a result of injuries received, the court was told. An investigation by Constable Pauline Meikle of the Spanish Town Police Station resulted in Williams being charged with wounding with intent.
