Former Governor General dies


Sir Howard Cooke passes at 98


Former Governor General Sir Howard Cooke died yesterday afternoon at age 98, THE STAR has learnt. The former governor general is reported to have been taken to the Andrews Memorial Hospital earlier this week.


Sir Howard served as an educator for 23 years before starting a life in politics in 1938, holding various capacities such as headmaster at Belle Castle All-Age School, Port Antonio Upper School and Montego Bay Boys' School.


He was also a member and former president of the Jamaica Union of Teachers.


Sir Howard, was installed as governor general of Jamaica at King's House on August 1, 1991 until February 15, 2006.
